Dear Sir or Madam,

Thank you for your interest in becoming a firefighter with our department.  In this packet, you will find information which we hope will help you determine if you are able to serve with our department.

You should be aware that not all applications are accepted.  Reasons for denial could be failure of the intensive background check, being convicted of a barrier crime, not possessing a Virginia Drives’ License, not having a high school diploma or GED, not being available for response at certain times, and any other reason deemed applicable by the line officers of the department.

The Clintwood Fire Department is a dedicated group of individuals who routinely work as a team.  We are looking for individuals who are interested in joining our team and display an ability to perform the requirements of the position of firefighter while functioning within a team.

I can’t stress enough that not everyone will meet the requirements of the position of firefighter.  Should your application be turned down, please consider joining the Clintwood Fire Department auxiliary and support team.

Thank you

Kenneth Adkins, Chief

Clintwood Fire Department

Clintwood Volunteer Fire Department

Serving Dickenson County and the town of Clintwood since 1950

The Clintwood Fire Department was formed by the town of Clintwood in 1950.  Throughout the years we have grown from a department serving only the Town of Clintwood with one engine to a department which provides first due service to 122 square miles of the town of Clintwood and Dickenson County.

Station 1 is located on Volunteer Ave. in Clintwood.  It houses 5 pieces of apparatus including Engine 1, Wagon 1, Tanker 1, Brush 1, and Support 1.

Station 2 is located on DC Caney Ridge Rd.  It houses Engine 2.

Our department routinely responds to a variety of incidents.  The majority of our incidents include motor vehicle accidents, structure fires, brush fires, missing persons incidents, technical rescues, and car fires.

CFD’s firefighters are required to be medically cleared for their work and are strongly encouraged to begin a physical fitness regimen.  Firefighting is strenuous, often brutally hot work.  It often demands that you operate in conditions of sensory deprivation and confined spaces.

All of our members are expected to respond to all incidents they are able to.  Our philosophy is that family is first, work is second, but we expect to be third.

Background Check

All applicants must submit to, and pass an intensive background check.  On the application you will find releases for your driving record and complete criminal history.  Additionally, the Clintwood Police Department and/or Dickenson County Sheriff’s Department will participate in the background check.

If you are granted an interview, we strongly encourage you to disclose any past felony and misdemeanor convictions and charges.  We also expect you to disclose any minor traffic convictions.

The Interview Process

Should your application be granted an interview, you will be notified by phone and/or email with an interview date.

Initial interviews are conducted by no less than three line officers (there may be more).  Please consider this a formal interview process.  Lack of timeliness and professionalism during the interview will be noted by the officers.  Please be prepared for the interview to last for a minimum of 1 hour.  It may very well last longer.  Also, please be prepared to discuss all aspects of your application.

Should the line officers who participated in the initial interview deem the applicant worthy, a second interview will be conducted during the department’s next business meeting (which the applicant is able to attend).  At this point, the applicant will interview with all the firefighters present at the meeting.  This interview is more of an informal one, but please be prepared for many questions from the members of the department.

What happens if you make it?

  • You will be notified of the status of your application after the second interview
  • You will be required to meet with the chief for a review of expectations
  • When available, you will be issued your equipment (remember all issued equipment is the property of Clintwood Fire Department is to be used only during incidents, training, or other instances approved by an officer)
  • You may start responding to incidents immediately thereafter
  • You will be assigned a preceptor with whom you should meet immediately and discuss your orientation to the department
  • You will be placed on a 6 month orientation and probation period (during this time you may be dismissed from the department for any reason and you do not have voting rights at department meetings)
  • You will be required to be certified to a minimum of Firefighter 1 within 2 years of your acceptance date (should you be enrolled in a Firefighter 1 course at your 2 year date, then you will be allowed to stay on the department until you complete that course and pass the certification test)
